For a more contemporary feel we use shaker style doors or you can go ultra-modern with handle-less slab doors.
Our customers often choose floating shelves to go with this style but the choice is up to you -you can mix the modern floating shelves with a more traditionally styled base cabinet from our 'classic' range, or add a more traditional built in bookcase on top of a modern styled base cabinet.
We also offer drawers and other bespoke options.
After a detailed survey of your room, precise 3D CAD drawings are created to show clearly how your bespoke fitted furniture will really look. You will have the opportunity to choose and confirm heights, depths, widths, shelf spacings and any other necessary details such as cabling arrangements and lighting. Or aim is to give you full confidence in what you are paying for. For more details on our process please visit our process page.
Cupboards or just shelves - we have perfected the best methods for fitting into alcoves for a result that is both attractive and sturdy. We teach our methods to other woodworkers via our YouTube channel and member site. So you will find plenty of imitators but you can have absolute confidence in Freebird!
We only use waterbased sprayed finishes with low solvent content. These professional finished are more environmentally friendly, with no compromise on quality and durability. We do a lot of work in brilliant white but we can mix our paint to match any colour. The sheen level is 15% (low sheen). On solid wood we use a durable clear lacquer which enhances the tone of the wood with no yellowing.
We offer a limited range of high quality materials to ensure the best results. For all painted projects we use the best quality moisture resistant MDF by Finsa - denser, harder, flatter and smoother than common paint grade solid timber alternatives. Like all Finsa products it is produced in a sustainable, environmentally friendly way. It enables us to offer a crisp high quality finish, with free swinging doors on concealed hinges, which will not twist or bind.
We also often work in birch plywood, and we use solid oak for countertops; log storage boxes and other details. And we can offer our floating shelves in a solid oak/oak veneered board mix, standard painted MDF, or birch plywood.
We often design and fit integrated lighting into our furniture. We use a tried and tested 12volt LED system which comes with a 7 year guarantee on the components. All we need is an available standard 3 pin socket and we will take care of the rest, including discrete switches concealed into the furniture, or even remote controlled systems.
A key part of our bespoke design service includes making sure cabling is well accommodated into the design - providing outlets in the most suitable places, and routing any cable that needs to pass through units in the neatest way. If sockets need to be moved etc, we do not directly undertake any electrical work but can recommend trusted electricians to work with, and in conjunction with them we can remount sockets neatly inside cabinets.

In this bespoke modern alcove project for wide alcoves in a property in Totley, Sheffield, we incorporated oak log storage boxes and dimmable lighting.
In this project video, shown the installation process in great detail, we fit oak floating shelves to a very high level of finish, with an angled 3-door base cabinet.
In this early but popular video (approaching 100k views!) we explain our own method of constructing floating shelves, now emulated by many others in the trade, and further refined by us since this video.
This short video demonstrates the quality of finish we achieve using our choice of materials and spray paint, compared to a more traditionally built and hand painted cabinet.
As demonstrated in this video where our floating shelves are tested to destruction, the answer to the question is that they are more than strong enough!!
In this video I show how I made industrial looking rustic floating alcove shelves from reclaimed scaffold boards and angle iron.
