Making the Most of an Awkward Space

Bespoke carpentry for awkward spaces

In this article we look at how, with some clever thinking, an awkward space can be transformed into a beautiful, usable space.

The customer approached Freebird for help with a particular room in their old converted farm building in Silkstone, Barnsley.

The couple spent a lot of time in their living room but it never felt like a comfortable place to sit and relax. The room was an unusual shape due to a previous conversion and contained a large bulkhead for the stairs that dominated the room but served no function. They had lived with this layout for a long time but couldn't work out what to do with it - it was a problem they didn't know how to solve. So they reached out to Freebird for our creative expertise, and we came up with recommendations and a design that fulfilled everything they needed and made the room a pleasant place to be in!

Before & After (slide to see)

In terms of functionality, the couple wanted somewhere to house the TV, some display shelving and accessible storage for folders and books. They were open to ideas for the big, deep space under the stair bulkhead.

At Freebird we like to get to know our customers and to understand how you use your space. Having listened carefully to the client we knew that they enjoyed the outdoors, were keen walkers and had quite a collection of OS maps. So we created them some clever pull-out storage perfectly sized so the maps could be easily accessed without dominating the room or collecting dust.

Finishing Touches

As a finishing touch we added lighting to give depth to the display shelving and to add ambience and warmth to the room.

With some creative thinking, we were able to transform this corner into a feature that can be enjoyed for years to come.
